What is cast iron guttering?
Cast iron guttering is a traditional rainwater drainage system manufactured from cast iron. It is known for its strength, durability and distinctive period appearance, making it particularly suitable for heritage properties, listed buildings, renovations and traditionally styled new builds.
Is cast iron guttering suitable for period properties?
Yes. Cast iron guttering is particularly well suited to period and heritage properties because its traditional profiles and detailing complement historic architecture. Different gutter profiles are available to suit different architectural styles.
How long does cast iron guttering last?
Traditional sand cast iron is manufactured to BS 460:1964, with an expected lifespan of up to 100 years when installed correctly and maintained to its guidelines.
Does cast iron guttering rust?
Cast iron can corrode if its protective coating or paint system becomes damaged and moisture is allowed to reach the metal. Regular inspection and appropriate maintenance can help protect the guttering and extend its service life.
Is cast iron guttering suitable for listed buildings?
Cast iron guttering can be suitable for listed and heritage buildings where an authentic traditional rainwater system is required. However, listed building or conservation area requirements can vary, so it is important to check whether approval or specific product requirements apply to your property.
What types of cast iron guttering are available?
Gutter Centre offers a range of traditional cast iron gutter profiles, including Plain Half Round, Beaded Half Round, Deepflow, Victorian Ogee, Notts Ogee and Moulded No. 46. Matching circular and rectangular downpipes and hopper heads are also available.
What is the difference between cast iron and cast iron effect guttering?
Genuine cast iron guttering is manufactured from cast iron, while cast iron effect guttering is typically made from modern materials such as uPVC and designed to replicate the appearance of traditional cast iron. Cast iron offers an authentic material and traditional construction, while cast iron effect systems provide a lightweight, lower-maintenance alternative.
Is cast iron guttering better than uPVC?
Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the building and project requirements. Cast iron is often selected for its authentic appearance, strength and longevity, while uPVC can provide a lighter and more straightforward alternative with lower maintenance requirements.
How do you maintain cast iron guttering?
Cast iron guttering should be inspected regularly for damage, and cleaned out periodically to remove debris. We highly recommend checking the fixings to ensure they are secure, washing the gutters down with clean water every 12 months (3-6 months if near the coast or an industrial area). As a side note, you should expect to repaint roughly every 8 to 10 years.
Can cast iron guttering be painted?
Yes. Cast iron guttering can be painted using an appropriate preparation and coating system. Maintaining the paint finish is also an important part of protecting cast iron from corrosion.
What size cast iron guttering do I need?
The appropriate gutter size depends on factors including the roof area, roof pitch, rainfall and the layout of the rainwater system. Larger roof areas may require a higher-capacity gutter or downpipe system. If you’re unsure, please contact our expert team at Gutter Centre, and we can advise on the best rainwater system for your property.
Can I replace existing cast iron guttering with new cast iron?
Yes. Replacement cast iron guttering can be used when restoring or refurbishing an existing rainwater system. Matching profiles, downpipes, angles and other fittings should be considered to ensure the replacement system is compatible with the existing building.
What finishes are cast iron gutters available in?
They are supplied transit primed, or with a factory wet-paint finish in semi-gloss black as standard, or in a specific RAL/BS colour on request. We do advise that all primed gutters should be reprimed, undercoated and painted before installation to maximise longevity.
Is it the same as the original Victorian cast iron?
It is still made to the same shapes and sizes as 100 years ago, which is why it suits like-for-like replacement on heritage projects.
How are the joints made?
The system is socketed, with male and female ends. The seal is a low-modulus sealant such as Arbosil 1096, held by a nut and bolt in the sole of the gutter.
How should I store it before fitting?
Keep it under cover on racks. If it must stay outside, use a tarpaulin so water doesn't get into the polythene wrapping.
